Yesterday was a fun, but a little bit different MoMo event....
First is that we co-hosted the event with MASTEL, the topic
was mobile infrastructure related. Naturally, we have a bit different
audience. But it was still filled with relax, fun and productive
atmosphere.
Here's the recap, as promised.
Pak Giri from MASTEL welcome the audience and gave an interesting
example on how broadband can bring productivity and increase quality of
life.
Werner Sutanto from Intel explained the status of WiMAX from around the
globe: deployment and use cases, drivers for adoption (which is the
pervasiveness of Internet), and most importantly certification status.
It is also interesting that major countries in SEA in the forefront of
WiMAX deployment. Networks in Singapore, Malaysia, The Philipines and
Cambodia are approaching commercial launch.
He shared Intel platforms that will go into notebooks and MID/mobile
handsets. Fueled by certification and mass adoption, chipset price will
go further down and drive the demand further.
Next, Yohan Suryanto from ABWINDO shared his view about the potential
of WiMAX in Indonesia. He mentioned clearly that access to
information is one of the key human
rights (Pancasila Sila V) and thus driving the demand for
bandwidth all across Indonesia. WiMAX is a key technology
enabler to serve this.
Yohan and Werner highlighted the need for thorough eco system to boost
adoption. (And later on also voiced by Trio).
As for Indonesia, he gave a number of good proposal to enable WiMAX,
such as: potential frequency band to be allocated, equipment standards,
licenses reward process.
Last but not least, Trio Adiono from ITB explained his bold vision to
enter the WiMAX chipset business. He and team have already 20 years of
experience in chip design, and he believed that the time is right for
Indonesia to ride on the WiMAX wave.
Their first product will be 2.3 GHz WiMAX baseband chipset. (Baseband
is the part which processes digital data from MAC/Ethernet layer into
IF data to feed the radio part, if you know what I mean).
We conclude the event with Google giving away a couple of mugs and a very interesting insight on what's
happening recently in Indonesian mobile Internet market. (Details after the
break).
As promised, here's the recap from the recent MobileMonday Event.
It was the Peer Awards night, so we started the event with a
five-minute sales pitch from all three contestants. The audience
listened with interest... prepared to cast their votes.
Next we played a short video from Nokia - the 4th Screen [Ed: or if you like Tomi's term:
the 7th Mass Media]. Basically mobile is the 4th screen
that we watch in our lives, but the most pervasive and personal.
Pak Richard Kartawijaya
followed up with an explanation of market progress and Mobile TV
deployment around the globe. Japan and Korea definitely are the
worldwide leader in Mobile TV. Some of the key factors
driving the deployment are availability of frequency, terminal
readiness, cultural factors and content availability. Content is always
a challenge, availability of mobile-tailored video/movies/episodes are
crucial [Ed: I can't
help thinking about the recently advertised 24 MobisodesandLipstikTV - one of our Peer Awards nominee]. And another
good news is CPE has been improving in battery life, usability and
processing power [Ed:
I'm thinking of the yummy Nokia N96], although still quite
some distance to go.
And then Iman Hirawadi from Alcatel
Lucent discussed the various technology options for
delivering Mobile Broadcast: employing mobile unicast/multicast
technology which leverages existing data connection, building overlay network such
as DVB-H, MediaFlo, T-DMB, and using hybrid terrestrial/satellite
broadcast (Korean S-DMB, Hybrind DVB-SH).
Each technology has their own merits and limitations in terms of
contents, spectrum availability, impact to voice/data capacity, and
scalability.
Indonesia?
Both speakers probed the possibility of doing Mobile TV in Indonesia.
From the technical point of view, national standards and frequency
allocation needs to be finalized [Ed:
digital TV is planned in 2015, so some free spectrum coming...].
Next, operators and early adopters, both consumer and business
users, need to find what are the values of Mobile
TV. Entertainment and lifestyle? News and information? Tele
education? Collaboration? Personal Productivity? New marketing
channels? The opportunity is wide open.
Final words: it's just the beginning of the Mobile Broadcasting era....
watch this space. Keep innovating. Open your eyes wide! We
also plan to get another session on Mobile TV later this year, looking
from the other angle - broadcaster, media, users, and telco.

Last night, we held our Peer Awards final. All three companies
presented their application/solution: MORE, Virtual Tribe,
and 12Frenz/Mobafone. After the presentation, the audience
voted for their favorites.
Congratulations for both innovative companies. As the winners,
they
have the rights to represent Indonesia in Global Peer Award rounds.
(Good luck you guys!)
The presentations for all the finalists and nominees will be made
available on this
website, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, please enjoy a short promo YouTube
video (46 secs) of Virtual Tribe,
which could not be shown yesterday due to technical glitch.
The jury event had been held successfully with 8 companies presenting their solution in front of the jury, to select top 3 finalists. (We've got few photos in Flickr: Jury Session Set)
The top 3 finalists will be invited to do a final presentation in front of their peers during the next MobileMonday gathering scheduled on Monday, May 26, 2008 at Amigos Restaurant, Bellagio Boutique Mall, Mega Kuningan, Jakarta.
The judges rated all participants in 5 categories, i.e. (1) Innovation/Creativity, (2) Uniqueness, (3) Commercial & Business Value, (4) Global Marketability, (5) Presentation Skills. The score resulted in a ranking of participants by each judge, which then is compared across all judges’ rankings to get the Top 3. (Sounds complicated, but it's actually rather simple)
We are happy to announce, based on the result of the jury session, 3 finalists had been selected, i.e. in no particular order:
MORE, by PT More Indonesia
Virtual Tribe, by ViTribe from Binus University
12Frenz, by PT Mobafone Indonesia
The finalists will receive a formal letter to confirm the result.
Congratulations for MORE, Virtual Tribe, and 12Frenz.
Again, thank you for all the shortlist and all applicants of Peer Awards 2008. We are confident that by being Peer Awards 2008 Shortlist, your company will receive enough publication and exposure, local and regional/global. All the best for you, and keep innovating!
